Bone Screening
A DEXA scan helps to measure your bone density and assess bone loss to evaluate your risk of developing fractures and disability.
You may need a DEXA in the following situations:
- Osteoporosis, or a family history of osteoporosis.
- Fracture from a minor fall, or early menopause hysterectomy.
- A family history of fractures and a low body mass index (BMI) less than 21.
- Rheumatoid arthritis.
- Inflammatory bowel conditions (irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease).
- Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid).
- Use of certain medication which may increase the risk of osteoporosis e.g. steroids, cancer drugs heparin etc
